Our government is a perfect example of Federalism We know theFramers-the people who wrote the Constitution- didnt just write adocument they wrote the set up and the future of our government Whydid they choose to set our government up this way This may look like anunanswerable question to some but there are things historians know to betrue that lead to an answer Several key facts and ideas lead to theFramers choosing Federalism One fact we know was that the revolution was fought in the name of selfgovernment The framers knew the government under the Articles ofConfederation wasnt strong enough to manage a growing nationsproblems They knew a strong national government crucial but they alsoknew a government with too much power would only cause more issues inthe end What could solve the problem of needing a tough yet manageablegovernmental system Federalism holds the answer to this questionSeveral things are known to be beliefs held by the Framers Firstly weknow they say governmental power as a threat to individual liberty Soaccording to the Framers as governmental power increases the freedomsof ordinary citizens decrease Another large belief the Framers held wasthat the exercise of governmental power should and needs to be limitedA third and possibly most important thought of the Framers was thatdividing the powers of the government like Federalism does preventsthe possibility of it being misusedWhat is so wonderful about federalism One extremely important part offederalism is the set up of the division of powers The division ofpowers under Federalism gives certain powers strengths and duties tothe national government and others to the states The nationalgovernment only gets the powers given to it through the ConstitutionThese powers must be given through the Constitutions written wordsstrong suggestions or because it is something that is necessary inorder to maintain our countrys sovereignty Examples of national powerswould be to maintain the countrys armed forces and regulatingimmigration The powers of the states are much greater in number thanthe powers of the
