A selfish person shows a lack of caring for other people andconstantly strives to obtain power In The Crucible Abigail Williamstells a progression of lies that have increasingly more severeconsequences as time goes on Abigail at the beginning of the story wasan innocent child until she got a taste of power What started out aschildish lies quickly became a serious matter that eventually led tomany unnecessary deaths Even though Abigail was trying to protectherself with her actions her desperation for power and her disregard ofhow her lies affected people show that she is a completely evilcharacter In the beginning of the play Abigail was telling lies with the intentof protecting herself Her and a few other girls were caught dancing inthe woods an act forbidden within Puritan society and she did not wantto be accused of witchcraft When asked what happened in the woods bythe adults Abigail lies and says that Tituba Reverend Parriss slavemade the girls conjure spirits Abigail turns on Tituba and blames herin order to save herself In the beginning of Act 1 Abigail threatensthe girls by saying Let either of you breathe a word or the edge ofa word about the other things and I will come to you in the black ofsome terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that willshudder youand I can make you wish you had never seen the sun godown 1268 Abigail threatened the girls into lying She is hidingwhat really happened in the woods at all costs so she wont be accusedof witchcraft as being deemed a witch would cause her to be hung Atthis point we see a glimpse of Abigails true character as she is beingextremely assertive and speaks to the girls with an evil tone Lyingabout what happened in the woods was somewhat of an innocent white lieHowever the nature of her lies quickly changes These lies that startedout as being innocent change dramatically as
