Anne Hutchinson has long been seen as a strong religious dissenter who paved the way for religious freedom in the strictly Puritan environment of New England She was a woman who challenged the traditional subordinate role of women in Puritan society by expressing her own religious convictions In her path to success however Anne was convicted of the crime of expressing her religious beliefs that were different from the colonys rulers Anne Hutchinson a Puritan left England and came to America in 1634 in search of a place where she could worship freely Anne wanted to feel free to express her increasingly Puritan views under the leadership of John Cotton who claimed there were opportunities for success and religious freedom in America unlike the religion of England favoring instead Catholicism Lauter 224 Unfortunately Massachusetts turned out to be more religiously constrictive than England for Anne even as a member of the Puritan church There was no freedom at all in the tightly focused introspective and concentrated Puritan community except to agree with the Doctrines set fourth by the church Lauter 181 Anne found the Puritans world fairly inflexible hierarchical in structure and uncompromising and decided to develop her own religious beliefs Lauter 180 She believed in a Covenant of Grace in which faith alone was enough to achieve salvation and that people could communicate directly with God -- without the help of ministers or the Bible Lauter 224 Anne taught her beliefs to others that would listen in her own home Her preachings were unjustly labeled antinomianism by the Puritans --a heresy- Since the Christian leaders of that day held to a strong Covenant of Works teaching which dictated the need for outward signs of Gods grace Lauter 224 Her purpose in expressing her opinions was not to break down the church but rather make positive change in those areas where the church was in error in her opinion Alone Anne was not a threat
