Shakespeares The Taming of the Shrew depicts the quiet reserved and gentle qualities of an ideal woman by showing how husbands and fathers wield power over the woman Throughout the play Shakespeare utilizes character traits to help recognize that Biancas quiet and demure attitude is attractive to men The use of Shakespeares male characters contributes also like when Lucentio remarks how Kates loud and indecorous behavior contrasts against her sisters much more desired quality traits Since Katherine is unusually vocal with her thoughts and sharp with her tongue for the Elizabethan era men are turned away from her preferring the more submissive and docile traits other women have to offer As Lucentio says But in the others silence do I see Maids mild behavior and sobriety Peace Tranio Shakespeare 1170 He is mentioning that Biancas more civil behavior is the winner among men showing that the men in the play prefer a woman who will listen and easily obey them As Harvey Rovine also observes Again in the first scene of the play Shakespeare contrasts the behavior of the two girls to enhance the particular quality of each one In this instance the silent and modest Bianca attracts no less than three suitors while her outspoken sister Kate cannot attract even one Rovine par 9 Trying to tame Katherine is deemed as being too much work for the men when they believe there should not be much effort wasted on her since she is a woman and supposed to come to them anyway Through the use of mens actions in the play woman are shown to be treated not as seriously and instead as more of a commodity For instance when Kate and Hortensios widow get into an argument both of their husbands are rooting for them encouraging a competition for who has the better woman Since Kate and the widow disagree it seems that they will not ever be on friendly terms
