Fraternity Urban Legends True or False In the essay The Questionable Values of Fraternities which was written by George Kuh Ernest Pascarella and Henry Weschler the authors discuss the controversial issues of alcohol abuse hazing date rape and academics in fraternities These authors argue that new college students which join and organization such as a fraternity are more likely to be influenced negatively on their intellectual as well as personal development The authors point out every little flaw that they can about fraternities in this essay yet seem to leave out the positive things that go on The authors point out that the majority of college students drink yet they are more likely to do so within the walls of the fraternity A study show by the authors claims that 86 percent of college students who live in a fraternity house binge drink compared with the 45 percent of non-frat members Kuh 88 One thing that is wrong with this study is there is no way of proving it Unless Harvard University gave each student a polygraph test they have no way to know if the students are telling them the truth about drinking The authors also seem to leave out the fact that some fraternities are dry chapters which means that drinking is prohibited within that fraternity The authors even contradict themselves when they argue that members of a fraternity or sorority binge drink then later say that people admit they were more likely to binge drink in high school When the authors accuse Greek organizations of not considering academics very important they could not be more wrong A fraternity provides a place to go if you need help with your school work If one of fraternity brother is struggling in one of his classes his other brothers are they to help him understand and help improve Though these authors accuse Greeks organizations as not intellectual they fail to see that some
