In the book When the Legends Die by Hal Borland Tom isinfluenced by many people and their ideas As his settings changenew things influence him to change his personality The threemain influences on Tom are his mother Bessie Red Dillon andHis biggest influence out of everyone would be his motherBessie She taught Tom about the old ways how to fish chant andweave baskets Basically she him everything he knows As well asteaching Tom all these things she taught him to be self sufficientEventhough she had 13 years with her son she gave him a beliefin his indian ways that would come back again later on in his lifeAt the end of this novel when he goes back to the old ways itsreally a way for him to thank her for everything she provided himwith He really found himself at the end of the novel and found hisRed Dillon was the total opposite of Bessie He made himforget about where he was from and his goals for life He pushedTom farther away from his history He also got him to cheat anddrink Tom knew these things were wrong but it stayed in hisroutine Red tested Tom to his fullest and pushed Tom to workharder Unfortunatley Red did not work quite as hard as Tom andeven got Tom to set a deadfall on one of his rides When he wasliving with the white man he was getting used to the white peoplesways all the while losing site of his Ute historyMary Redmond who was another of Toms influences playeda big role in encouraging Toms to change his ideas about life ingeneral She was the one looking over him wile he was staying inthe hospital She was the only person that was in the hospital whotruly cared for him He knew she meant well but he was scared toask her for help because he had been let down so many timesbefore in his life She changed his thinking
