Literary Criticism on Ode on a Grecian Urn Ode on a Grecian Urn a poem by Hon Keats talks about a reaction that Keats has to an urn painted with images of maidens pipers and other Greeks The images have a sensual effect on Keats because the images are timeless moments of perfection Every object on the urn has its own perfection and the objects will stay timeless forever The poem can be best described by the literary terms romanticism and classicalism The literary term for romantic has two widely used meanings In the book Contemporary Authors the term romantic refers to a European intellectual and an artistic movement of the later eighteenth century Men sought for greater freedom of personal expression that was not allowed by neoclassicist However the second term has more meaning to the literary term romantic Romantics general term which is in the book Contemporary Authors refers to a type of literary history that is considered to be in opposition to the principles of classicism In other words romantic signifies any work in which the author speaks about an exotic or dreamlike figure strongly Keats describes the urn as an unravished bride of quietness The urn is untouched and sitting at hand to be admired Keats writes about the painted trees being forever perfect because the trees will never lose their leaves On one side of the urn it shows a young man about to kiss a maid Keats is jealous of the young man because the maid will stay young and beautiful and they will stay in live forever in love This is an example of classicism Classical has the same meaning as romanticism but goes further with the meaning Classical refers to a devotion to an individuals expression self analysis or a pursuit of a higher realm or knowledge that can be discovered by human reason Keats wants the reader to understand the true meaning of beauty
