When looking back at America during the colonial era one tends to view women as primary shapers in the world of marriage and child-raising as well as household duties As more information is uncovered women are found to be just as responsible as men in creating their societies and becoming a significant factor in the progression of American culture and history In fact women had to overcome many more difficult obstacles than men in order to prove themselves as being worthy The obstacles varied between women of different background including their status in class as well as their race In attempting to examine understand and explain the Puritan and Colonial women their lifestyle and their many facets an individual must comprehend the many hats that these women were forced to wear The challenging roles and lifestyle of a woman of the Puritan-Colonial period reflected directly upon a society that was well-established in a religiously driven male dominated tyrannical social system that would define many generations in the New World Unfortunately history has forsaken many of the important women of their time and the roles that they had to fill Today it is important to recognize and understand these roles Many titles could fit the everyday role of the Puritan Colonial good wife A good wife might be described in many of the following ways a mother housewife neighbor mistress and at times heroine Thus womens roles were seen as being limited to wives mothers and household managers When looked back upon however it is apparent that women held positions that were more effective than originally portrayed Throughout the day the housewife would find herself banking the fire coaxing a blaze setting dough to rise baking bread and boiling meat In between she turned to the most pressing tasks that varied by season dairying milking and making cheese and butter gathering eggs and feeding chickens or managing her vegetable garden These positions aided in the
