Chinas progress in its developing economy is impressively fast and dramatic For example China has sustained an average of 10 annually GDP growth that is many times over United States average annual GDP growth rate of 2 for the same period Chinability 2009 Such economic advancement brought millions of Chinese citizens out of poverty and it also forced millions of them to leave their rural villages seeking opportunities in the cities The Last Train Home a documentary by director Lixin Fan shows its audience around the globe the complicated reasons and conflicts underlying such migration pattern Zhang and his wife the focus of the documentary and also the representation of 130 million migrant workers had to travel for days as they transferred from train to bus then a ferry ride just to get home 1300 miles away The title implies not only the hardship the millions of migrant workers have to endure travelling back home every Chinese New Years but also the life altering decisions they face every time they go home Whether those are between education or work family or additional income the decisions workers make will ultimately determine whether the most recent train ride home was the last one or not Often these decisions are not their own to make Labor migration or urbanization migration as suggested by the film was pushed by economic pressure and the underdevelopment of rural areas In a recent statistic the urban population earns roughly three times more than the rural population China Daily 2010 The rural population consisting of mainly seniors and children is highly dependent on working age family members These family members provide financial support by earning wage in the city to maintain their rural families daily basic needs In 2005 the total remittance migrant workers sent
