Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak announced the deadline on Saturday saying that if Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat failed to end the violence the peace process was dead and Israels military would use whatever force necessary to bring calm to the streets Before the deadline passed Arafat who blames Israeli soldiers for the continued fighting met in Cairo Egypt with President Hosni Mubarak and then returned to Gaza where he was due to meet with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan Although neither Arafat nor Mubarak made statements after their meeting Egyptian Information Minister Safwat el-Sherif said they had discussed a possible cease-fire in the crisis and the importance of restoring the Mideast peace process to its normal state They also talked about the issue of east Jerusalem and Palestinian sovereignty over it el-Sherif said Barak was scheduled to meet later Monday with cabinet ministers to discuss Israels next move A US official speaking on condition of anonymity expressed disappointment that Arafat did not use
