STDs and College Students Natalie Whitney Robert was only 20 years old His football career at Hampton University was at its ultimate high he was breaking running back records set by professional athletes and was estimated to be drafted into the NFL at the end of the season Lately he had noticed he tired more easily than usual and was having a constant pain in his private area he decided to see the team doctor who suggested that Robert take some tests As he sat in the clinic lobby he replayed the game plan for this weeks game he waited thinking nothing of his situation When the door finally opened he was handed 2 pieces of paper that would affect him for the rest of his life he had Herpes and was given a prescription to help suppress symptoms but was told that there was no cure and that maybe he should sit a couple of games out Robert is only one out of the millions of college kids who are infected each year with a STD We need to be aware and make college students aware of the consequences of unprotected sex and sex with multiple partners STDs are sexually transmitted diseases Their names and causes are vast and terrible The three most common STDs among young people are Chlamydia Trachomatis Herpes and Genital Warts NIAID Chlamydia is the number one bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the United States today Four to eight million new cases of Chlamydia are occurring each year In both men and women Chlamydia infection may cause an abnormal genital discharge and burning with urination Simeonova 5 This disease is known as the silent epidemic because three quarters of the women and half of the men that are infected have no symptoms Genital herpes affects an estimated 60 million Americans Approximately 500000 new cases of this incurable viral infection develop annually The major symptoms of herpes infection are painful
