Wayne Gretzky Like any sport hockey is a game with a varied cast of characters Hockey teams are composed of grinders blue liners solid goal scorers netminders and superstars They each have their own role to play in the winter drama but no one played their role so well as Number 99 Wayne Gretzky Unlike several goal scorers Wayne has shown consistency of the past 20 years have his hockey career he has become the highest goal scorer ever to play in the NHL He was born in 1969 in born Brantford Ontario a rural community in the southwestern part of the province His father Walter spent his life working at a blue-collar job for a telephone company in Brantford Several people may have suspected Waynes father to cash in once the month tap began to flow But Walter continued his job for the Phone Company Usually by age 2 most children can walk but by that age the first born son of Walter and Phyllis Gretzky had learned to skate At the unusually young age of 6 Wayne had graduated from the backyard rinks and was ready to play with other boys He often played with 7 and 8 year olds Wayne could skate shoot and score better than any of them Waynes talent became a problem for Walter most organized leagues began with 10 year olds not 6 year olds That winter the gods were smiling down on Gretzky He was allowed to try out for the Brantford Atom League Wayne made the cut for the team just imagine a 6-year-old playing hockey with kids almost twice his age not to mention Waynes jersey was at least 5 sizes to big In his first year with the team he did not win MVP He didnt win the scoring title Despite the fact he was nearly half the age of the others he was a pretty average hockey player He
