What Beliefs Can a Modern Christian Derive from the Titles of Jesus The Disciples understanding of the titles of Jesus evolves throughout all of the Gospels this is reflected in particular in Marks Gospel with his use of the titles for Jesus Mark opens the Gospel using the Term the Son of God showing this is his opinion of how Jesus should be viewed The title Son of God most obviously refers to the promise God made with king David that his descendants would follow him onto the throne of Israel one of them being the Son of God a Messiah It can be said though Jesus never physically sat on the throne of Israel But a Christian making an anti-semitistic statement can often be argued down by another saying Jesus was in fact the King of the Jews whose homeland is Israel so when thinking metaphorically this fits rather nicely However this title is only used four times throughout the Gospel one mentioned above another when Jesus is exorcising demons in Mk 311 they would call out You are the Son of God but he would immediately silence them suggesting he did not want people to hear him referred to in this way in Mk 146162 facing trial before the High Priest He answers yes when questioned if He was in fact the Son of God suggesting this was perhaps the true title for him and ultimately on the cross when the centurion says truly He was the Son of God in Mk 1539 again suggesting he generated this image whether he wanted to or not Christians today would say that this title means that He was God the Son the second part of the Holy Trinity the incarnation of God Personally I feel it shows his more human side because he knew being God he was going to die and was afraid of exactly what people would do if they
