All that we are is the result of what we have thought If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought pain follows him If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him -Buddha Evil when we hear this word we think of the devil death or horrid things But the three authors of these books dont bring evil out in such a blunt way they underline their evil within their characters The theme of evil is apparent in three of the novels that we read this year Antigone Return of the Native and Of Human Bondage In these three novels the motif of evil leads to the main character becoming an outcast Because of the different time periods the authors wrote in they are able to show the same idea of evil in different yet similar ways In Sophocles Antigone the evil is present within Antigone her-self because of her high ideals Antigone had wanted to release her brothers sprit by burying him In that time of the Greeks it was not the role of the women to speak out against anything especially the king Her actions were perceived as disrespectful and insensibly idealistic The evil that came from the king causes Antigone to become an outcast We can see his evil for the first time in scene 1 ll 8-11 Gentleman I have the honor to inform you that our Ship of State which recent storms have threatened to destroy has come safely to harbor at last guided by the merciful wisdom
