Imagine that you and your friends are going to go surfing You wake up really early wax your board and get your self amped for the day The weather report from the day before predicted seven foot waves When you get there its flater than a roller rink Alas all is not lost for the school next door to your favorite beach has concrete waves frozen in time So you and your friends grab your other boards and head towards the school for a long day of sidewalk surfing Maybe this hasnt happened to you You may never have surfed in your life much less skateboarded But perhaps you have wondered how skate boarding began 50s Skate boarding began in the 50s on the west coast here in California The first skate boards Metal wheels roller skates 24s Werent wide Clay wheels came onto scene in 1954 and soon found there way onto homemade boards First marketed skate board sold in 1959 it was the roller derby skateboard 60s Skate boarding soared to new hights thanks to publicity the young sport received The publisher of surf guide began to promote skateboarding larry Stevenson formed Makaha first ever professional skateboards 1960s surf champ hobie alter joined up with vita pakt juice company and created hobie skateboards first ever skate contest Hermosa CA 1964 consited of slalom downhill and freestyle Free style consited of mainly surfing based maneuvers handstands hanging ten 360 carves manuals and nose manuals Absolutely nothing like it is today With the first ever contest there was a good amount of publicity and the young sport took off 3 million boards were sold in under 3 years In 1965 the sport practically died over night because of safety health hazards and unsafe riders Boards became increasingly more diffucult to find and the die hards of the sport
