A major controversy that has many nutritionists and scientists at war with each other is how to lose weight There are quite a number of possible factors that are argued that cause weight gain Among them are the basics in no specific order eating too much fat calories or carbohydrates Another more recent approach to weight loss is to simply swallow diet pills which involves no willpower whatsoever These theories have been debated heavily for years now and many people have gone back and forth trying to find the diet that is right for them Regardless it is an important issue as many Americans would do almost anything to lose weight due to the medias glamorizing thin models and the overall nationwide focus on good health It is my objective to clarify the issues state the pros and cons of each diet and present my own opinion and the logic behind it Since the 1960s Americans have been told that the more that they cut down on fat the better it is for their overall health and that this diet will result in weight loss The theory is very simple and easy to digest no pun intended- you are what you eat By eating less fat no doubt your bodys fat content will diminish Over the years more and more Americans have been heeding this advice and the result is a glut of low fat foods at your local supermarket This phenomenon has gone to such an extreme that one well-known expert Dr Dean Ornish recommends stripping away all added fats and naturally added fats so that your diet contains no more than 10 percent of calories from fat The average amount of calories from fat among Americans was 44 percent in the 1960s and is now down to 34 percent An obvious positive to the shift toward the low fat low cholestorol diet has been that the rate of heart disease among Americans
