The date is March 3 2006 Finally that dreadful day arrives it marks my first day at a new school in Ireland My heart is in my throat and I cannot sit still I am that nervous Pacing around in circle in my attic bedroom I recite Hello My name is Alissa Todd I am twelve years old Nice to meet you Easy enough right Not if you have never talked in English in front of a room full of people I am raised in Dutch and Japanese and only speak limited English with my father For a second I close my eyes and mentally teleport myself back to The Netherlands How I wish I am there now But then I hear my mom yell at me to leave the house or I will be late for my first day at school and my day dream is cut shortI step outside and as the chilly morning wind hits my face I am reminded yet again how cold Ireland is Every step I take brings me closer to school and I feel as though there are weights attached to my legs making it a struggle to keep going Suddenly I feel like turning around and rushing back home because the most feared question or at least for a twelve year old- crosses my mind What if nobody likes me After all I am the new girl arriving at the school more than halfway through the year And if that is not bad enough I have a thick accent and an extremely limited English vocabulary Whilst I am dwelling on these thoughts I hear the laughter of friends sharing a joke the faint yelling of teachers as they try to control the crowd of students and friends cheerfully greeting each other I have finally arrived at schoolThe principal who talks too fast for me to understand a single word finds me cautiously entering the school yard and
