Last June I was put in a dilemma of staying home with my dad throughhospice or pursuing the selection of a junior world championship forrowing My suitcase was packed my expenses for my room and board werepaid and mentally and physically I was prepared in the best shape of mylife I had worked and trained for four years spending twenty-one hoursa week to make my erg scores note-worthy Mentally my mindset was likea human robot in the aspect of rowing being the most dominant part of mylife The night I was supposed to leave for Junior National Teamselection camp the UCLA medical center contacted my family regarding myfathers MRI scans of his brain After meeting with oncology and doctorLinda Liau it was discovered that there was a new GBM stage four braintumor that was a butterfly that was penetrating deep into his skullWith another surgery he would be at high risk of losing all of hismotor skills with an emphasis of speech and not being able to speakSince 2006 he had two surgeries several months of radiation andchemotherapy chronic migraines and seizures and he decided that hewould rather go into hospice and spend his time left with family andfriends than spend the last few years of his life in doctors offices I was absolutely devastated no words can describe the emotion andheartbreak I felt at that moment I took for granted the time I had withhim and thought that because he fought the cancer so valiantly the firsttwo times he would always pull through As a seventeen year old highschool student I wasnt ready to face the reality of having to let goof a parent In that moment I thought about what I would have to doabout selection camp I felt anger frustration confusion and painAll the emotions in my body I wanted to take out on my dad although Iknew him getting sick was not something he could control My familyfriends and coaches pleaded
