Personal StatementMy longtime fascination with law enforcement and the criminal justice system can be traced to my childhood However my decision to pursue this dream started with my strong sense of justice and my father a former police officer I believe the most significant influence that has shaped the individual I am today is my upbringing in a male dominated Mendi culture Although dead few years ago my father always wanted me to follow in his footstep of serving in the criminal justice system With respect to this he has been a vital source of support in every decision that I have taken in life As a boy I was taught the Mendis three basic tenets- public service honesty and hard work Another pivotal experience that has had an enormous influence on me during the past decades has been my time at the University of Liberia The abuse of power and the excessive use of force by law enforcement practitioners were circumstances that motivated me to the study of criminal justice and criminology Additionally I was infuriated by the rising number of criminal acts in Liberia as the nation experienced dramatic political social and economic reforms in the 21st Century Also I began even more disappointed with law enforcement agents failure to prevent and minimize crimes in the country But as a university student the best alternative available at the time was to raise the awareness and hope that the appropriate actions were initiated regarding crimes Interestingly it is such an initiative that became my strongest motivation back in Liberia and even in the United States of America When I initially moved to the United States from Africa I thought of developing myself educationally and professionally I mean by being involved and constructively taking advantage of opportunities that reignited my interest in criminology and the criminal justice system Furthermore as a resident of Wellington a crime prone section of the city I
