Bridget's feedback:
"You are off to a good start, and with some refining of structure and argumentation, you'll have a solid investigation of the presence of women in the novel. One area to focus on as you move forward will be using the introduction and thesis statement to signpost the direction of the discussion. First, note that you open with a claim about gender roles; this, however, is not touched on in each supporting claim. You will either want to include specific reference to gender roles as you discuss each woman or shift your opening statement to avoid signposting something that isn't ultimately the central idea.
Related, you name three women in the first paragraph but also discuss a third (called Montano in your essay; I believe you are referring to Ts'eh); also, your discussion of Tayo's mother is very brief and mostly summary--should the character get top billing, as she does here? Consider, instead, the actual focus of the body paragraphs of this draft: Auntie, Old Grandma, and Ts'eh. Craft a statement in the introduction that matches up.
Your writing is clear and mechanically sound. Check your style guide for properly placing page numbers and quotation marks when using direct quotations, which should themselves be incorporated smoothly into the surrounding text."
