In the 1940s Louisianas conflict between whites and blacks was a way of life Society would view white males superior to black men In the novel Of Love and Dust the characters Marcus Payne and Sidney Bonbon are perfect examples of a prejudice society Marcus was a troubled young African American male sent to jail He was bailed out by Marshall Hebert and sent to a plantation to become a wage slave While on the plantation he awaits trial for killing a young man Sidney better known as Bonbon was an older white male He was the Cajun overseer of the plantation He was also in charge to watch Marcus and make sure not to escape Even though these two men had various differences they were also immensely similar In the 1940s the south was a cruel place for black and white couples Marcus and Bonbon unexpectedly fell in love with forbidden women but only Marcus was seen as the criminal Bonbon as the overseer of the plantation had the right to dishonor the women One in particular was Pauline an African American slave on the plantation he took advantage of her and shortly after they fell in love She became the mother of his twins which he was very proud of Bonbon had a wife on the plantation named Louise a Caucasian woman Marcus trying to seek revenge began to have sex with Louise They too were soon to fall in love Both mens vulgar actions lead to unannounced love affairs with once irrelevant women Even though both men were aggressive in different ways they both showed an immense amount of violence Both men saw violence as an answer to most problems that would be in their way Marcus actions were aggressive while Bonbons personality was aggressive Marcus showed aggressiveness when he was first in jail when he fought the young man and killed him or when he fought Bonbon
