In the short story of William Faulkner A Rose for Emily he gave great emphasis on the idiosyncratic behavior of the main character named Emily Grierson In mere looking at Griersons behavior it would be easy to conclude that she is having a psychological problem In fact even the townspeople cannot understand why Emily has to spent years sleeping and living with the corpse of Homer Despite their observation the townspeople cannot straightly say that Emily was really crazy Kirszner A Rose for Emily p 32 Indeed the story never mentioned that she was diagnosed or even treated by a mental health professional This paper aims to explore on the short story A Rose for EmilyIn the story there are some episodes whereas Emily demonstrated some abnormalities in her behavior Through her actions alone and by being isolated from the townspeople give a hint about her mental illness Apparently the people around Emily deny the fact and just leave her doing what she wished In relating her actions and behaviors with current psychiatric practices it shows that she is suffering from schizophrenia It is reasonable enough that her mental illness is due to all the traumatic events in her life such as the death of her fatherThe story illustrates how Emily secluded herself from the people and in that event it would be much harder for her to develop defense mechanisms against all kinds of stressors Thus Faulkner demonstrates the difficulty in diagnosing a mental illness considering that it requires accurate findings and assessment from mental health professional In the story the death of Emilys father creates a severe impact to her life Their family who was once in great wealth and stature many people have such great expectations from Emily In fact when Emily was still young she had so many suitors and her father drove them away As a result Emily remained single and her father eventually died leaving her alone Such traumatic
