In my opinion with the amount of time a child spends in school each school day becomes indistinguishable from the next I cant remember how I spent that morning there was nothing special about the bus ride to school The details of how I had gotten to my classroom are non-existent What I do remember is pushing my desk aside to join the other children in my first grade class Who by now were sitting cross legged on the floor waiting for todays story time Can anyone tell me who we read about last week Mrs Kline asked patiently Rosa Parks An uncertain few of my classmates answered Yes Thats right class and this week we are going to be learning about Martin Luther King Jr Mrs Kline sat down on a chair she had taken care to place openly in front of the crowd of children Crossing her legs she thumbed to the beginning page of a book titled Martins Big Words The Life of Dr Martin Luther King Jr In traditional fashion after reading each page she would sweep the book left to right assuring that each child was able to view the illustrations Each page illuminating our young minds to the life of a peaceable man starting with his childhood and listening to his father preach to his roles in civil rights movements like the Montgomery bus boycott touching only briefly on his death After finishing the story I couldnt understand why anyone would kill someone who had seemed like such a nice person I remember it being the first question I asked as soon as I had gotten home from school that day Mom do you know who Martin Luther King is There was a pause and then she answered Yeah Why Why did they kill him I asked innocently I wasnt prepared from the blunt answer I was about to receiveBecause he was a She thoughtlessly
