Freud and Geertz were two very influential men on approaches to the studies of religion with two very diverse theories from each other Sigmund Freud developed the book The Future of an Illusion in 1927 His perspective in this book developed around a psychoanalytic approach claiming religion as being the illusion an illusion when a fulfillment is a prevalent factor in its motivation and therefore in doing so we disregard its relations to reality The idea that every civilization must be built up on coercion and renunciation of instinct He believed that not only do illusions compensate men for their sufferings in which a civilized life has imposed on them Clifford Geertz had a different approach to the study of religion than Freud or any other scholars we have thus studied Geertz studied religion through an anthropological and social-scientific outlook He believed religion as a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the moods and motivation seem realistic Symbols are essential to Geertzs study of religion in order to find a way of interpreting them which helps one find the meaning of a given religion He created a model for and a model of reality claiming a model for is to inform our ethos which influences how we should feel or act in certain circumstances Models of was the influences our worldview or how the world around us the abstract of what one thinks the world around them should work or look like Geertz believed that any individual or group can have a religion even if no one believes in an Ultimate God deity or afterlife There is a religion for every group and individual because we all have some overall framework that members can share in common He also developed a two stage operation the first
