Our society tends to characterize addicts by their appearance When the term addict comes to mind one may conjure up the image of a skinny pale person in a dark street corner shooting up heroin Addiction although cannot only be characterized by the physical traits there are many factors such as psychological behavioral familialcultural and social that can come to play Looking at addiction with this perspective can allow one to see the forms with which addiction can take place When it comes to Kate addiction takes form in shoplifting Kate is a 32 year old stay-at-home mom who has been consumed by the addiction of shoplifting In our initial encounter with Kate she and her three year old son are shopping at Costco The initially simple shopping trip although takes a turn for the worse Her son Patrick set his sights on a Dora DVD and persisted to whine until his wants were obliged To put a stop to whining regardless of whether it is reinforcing of his behavior Kate ripped off the packaging stating that the price was a rip-off and placed it into their shopping cart After obtaining the rest of the items on her shopping list she puts the DVD under her clothing with no emotion She is stopped by a security guard and arrested It is not too surprising to find out that this was not Kates first shoplifting attempt She was able to steal with no emotion The usual emotion of fear and anxiety felt when a person is stealing was not present in the slightest The consequences of jail and humiliation have not fazed her She continued to shoplift despite the lack of need for the products she stole Yet Kate is a peculiar case because she stated that she did not feel the same sense of adrenaline and excitement that other compulsive shoplifters felt Kate only reported the temporary happiness she felt making it home without
