Through Holdens EyesThe Catcher in the Rye has truly earned its place among great classicworks J D Salinger created a literary piece that was completely unique Theentire novel was written in thefirst person view of the 17-year-old Holden Caulfield The majority ofthe story is compiled ofHoldens rudimentary monologue of complexly simple thoughts the restutilizing his relay ofprevious dialogue That and the use of unique punctuation digressingexplanations andcomplex characterization transformed the simple plot into the complexliterary classic The novels dialogue and monologue alike manage to relay the feel ofnatural speakingsuch asI mean youd be different in some way - I cant explain what I meanThe contractions youd and cant - since they are common in everydaylanguage - establish avery common and simple tone Stress on the first syllable ofdifferent reinforces the tone bydemonstrating how typically they speak just as in reality He usesdashes for pauses andsignaling associative digressions Instead of signaling pauses commasare used mostly wheremechanically required for instanceSo all of a sudden I ran like a madman across the street - I dnear got myself killeddoing it if you want to know the truth - and went in this stationarystore and bought a pad andpencilHolden Caulfield creates a thought provoking point of view On thesurface many of histhought patterns seem unrelated and straying from the topic Hisassociation of topic withdigression is used almost constantly throughout the novel Howeverrealizing that thesedigressions are very relevant and even crucial to the topic allow thereader to gain true insight tothe character His statements about his sisters intelligence followedby explanations of howwell she listens reveals Holdens associations of intelligence withbeing quiet and observant Another example would be his tension around the nuns Even though heenjoyed theconversation he worried about being asked if he was Catholic Hestated they would haveliked it better if he were Catholic This gives insight to hisdiscomfort with being judged morallyand to his association of people of morals looking down on those whodont share them In Holdens
