LikesDislikes Essay To me the best kind of writing or reading is a story that gives a lesson or provokes thought Reading a story that has a lesson gives me a sense of purpose for reading it The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant is such a story Mathilde the main character is a materalistic and unappreciative person but wit a few obstacles she changes her ways and learns a very important lesson Thus because Mathilde does learn a lesson the story is extremely likable The storys appeal results from Mathildes strong character ability to change and the lesson that she learned Mathildes strong character helps her overcome her hardships At first she is a spoiled materialistic person who is always dreaming about a better life than what she has When she gets a chance at happiness she loses the necklace she borrowed and has to sacrifice all her dreams to pay to replace the necklace Her ability to be strong throughout her hardships teaches everybody who reads the story an important lesson about being happy with what you have Mathildes ability to accept what has happened to her makes her a likable character Once she realizes she and her husband are faced with the responsibility and debt to replace the necklace she forgets her dreams and accepts the fact She worked as hard as a slave doing dirty housework washing dishes and hand washing the laundry She had to give up her maid move to a cheaper flat and wear cheaper clothes Mathildes acceptance of her fate is an important lesson for everyone to learn In the end Mathilde learned a very important lesson The necklace she had worked so hard for to replace turned out to be a fake Her so called friend she borrowed the necklace from turnedout to not be such a good friend Mathilde told her friend of the replaced necklace and all
