An essay on the book AMAZING GRACE Just some thoughts on something more of substance An age is called Dark not because the light fails to shine but because people refuse to see it -James Michener It never crossed my mind when I received the book Amazing Grace that its words would change how I viewed my life my town my family my school and especially my country Having heard so much about the book I had expected hundreds of pages which would portray a harsh blunt and unforgiving critique about the lives of those residing in the South Bronx I had expected to be repulsed and frightened by what was written I had expected to find a relentless rancor but what I found was quite the opposite The people of Mott Haven were not the ignorant misspoken ugly violent people I had envisioned It took me some time to find the correct word to describe people like Mrs Washington David Cliffe Anthony Reverend Overall and that precious little girl Anabelle human beings that exhibit a greater sense of caring and giving than I could ever hope to know After much reflection I realized that the only word that could ever really encompass who these people are is beautiful
