The puritans were a very fearful strict and highly religious people This is explained well in Arthur Millers The Crucible and in Johnathon Edwards Sinners in the Hands of on Angry God These traits in the society had positive effects and negative effects Fearfulness had its positive tolls on the society They feared the worst things to happen to themselves and to the community By fearing many things they were very well prepared they took extreme caution in everything that they did They knew the difference between right and wrong and used their knowledge to fight the evil among them such as in The Crucible The people of Salem were all afraid of witch craft They took extreme measures to overcome this by summoning people to court threatening of hanging to certain individuals and threatening their reputations among the community The fearfulness in the community also produced negative aspects as well For instance The Crucible again everybody was afraid of witch craft and everybody thought somebody else was a witch by accusing that they took away peoples reputations and dignity The puritans often feared too much they could not go on with their everyday life because they were afraid of something They worried about simple everyday things like what the neighbors will think if they do this or what the community will think if they do not go to church this Sunday The reactions to the fear in the community could be deadly also A person could be hanged on suspicion of witch craft just because someone was afraid of that person There were major religious aspect to fear as well If you did not attend church then you were condemned to hell by the minister and other citizens Many feared this frequently and became annoyed with it and to avoid it the were under the strict policy of attending church every single Sunday Along with the fearfulness came strictness The whole puritan
