1 Columbus describes the people he encounters by their culture resources and behavior The men women and children are described as nude savages They cover certain body parts with a leaf or cotton Also Columbus notices that the Native Americans are not armed They have no weapons or the resources that make up these armed materials such as iron and steel At first Columbus describes the Americans as shy and uncomfortable He continues to be around them and bribes them with gifts What gifts In return the Indians offer their resources to the Europeans and become more comfortable with Columbus and his people What resources do they offer Columbus describes the Indians as good-hearted people but somewhat pushovers Believing that because they never say no they can easily be manipulated or tricked In my opinion Columbus description is bias since he constantly compares his culture resources and behavior to the Native Americans2 The film differs from Columbus description of the Native Americans The Native Americans act curious and seem interested in the people from the Old World The Indians observe the Europeans through natural sensations touching their hats feeling their skin and smelling their scent They seem to be most fascinated about the color of their skin and the resources they have with them In the reading Columbus first describes the native as shy and timid people making one believe that Indians hid from the Europeans because they were afraid3 As far as warfare Native Americans fought with spears bows and arrows Europeans fought off enemies with swords knives and guns Europeans had better artillery than the Native Americans which gave the English a better advantage of defeating the Indians Not to mention the English rode horses which also was an advantage of conquering and made it easier to fight off adversaries since Indians travelled by foot4 In near sight the Indians glanced at Columbus ship Native Americans could not figure out what it was
