Cormac McCarthy has a way with violence whose works often include war or other tragedies Throughout his early novels and especially during the Border Trilogy McCarthy focuses on how wars and mans violent nature cause God to leave them in their times of need In All the Pretty Horses World War II had just ended During the novel the main character John lives with his grandfather and after his death decides to leave with a friend to Mexico On their way they encounter a stranger and travel together for a while but have to split up when others pursue them After reuniting the stranger kills a man and authorities try to go after all three However John and his friend were being protected by their employer until he finds out John was having an affair with his daughter Cities of the Plain is a story of both John from All the Pretty Horses and Billy from The Crossing Together the pair work on a farm in Mexico While in Mexico John falls in love with a prostitute and they plan to marry in America Unfortunately the prostitutes pimp is also in love with her and when she leaves has his right hand man kill her When John finds the body he immediately goes to confront the pimp During a knife fight John is fatally injured but he does manage to kill the pimp He survives just long enough for Billy to comfort him Afterward Billy lives under a highway underpass until he meets a man whom he thinks is death Post encounter Billy leaves and lives with a family Between All the Pretty Horses and Cities of the Plain lays the story of Billy The story begins by Billy needing to capture a wolf that was killing cattle Instead of killing the wolf he decides to take
