On the evening of November 111999 the Southwest TexasTrombone Ensemble provided an apprehensive crowd with atruly wonderful performance Starting with Sonata No1 forTrombone Choir by Evan Copley the ensemble exhibitedfabulous variety in both the note and the speed in whichthey were playing This skill mindfully produced a range ofemotions including anxiety and uneasiness Charles RHurt the conductor of the ensemble skillfully piloted theensemble in formulating an eerie feeling I envisioned acemetery scene with the light fog worn tombstones andmourners draped in black The mood changed for the betterwith the arrival of the allegro bringing with it a sound ofa climax which flutters ones emotions Sonata No1concludes climaxing one final time with a abrupt powerfulA highly emotional piece by Kazimierz Serocki titledSuita na 4 Puzony flowed placidly interrupted every so oftenby sounds of concern as if someone were about to beattacked by suprise All the feelings produced in theintrada are subdued by the depressing dark cold canone Its a slow melody of sadness but a sadness of extrememeasure A low pitch adds to the aura of mortality Thesetwo particular feelings anxiety and gloom are toyed withthroughout During the arietta a splendid job was done inbuilding up the final Toccatina There seemed to be acompetition of sorts between the ensemble with sounds comingfrom each horn individually and sporadically This effectcreated quite a frantic and raving atmosphere To concludethe piece the ensemble triumphantly came into unisonexploding with sounds of victory for the audience to discusswith one another during intermissionFollowing the intermission the terrific trio of JoelDavidson Joe Kramer and Mike Lawson performed DavidPotters Aria Rondo This piece commences with Mr Kramerand Mr Lawson playing a slow but peaceful melody soon to bejoined by Mr Davidson a few seconds later There is then aseries of progressive climatic surges repeating three orfour times I was personally overcome with a picture ofsomeone attempting to hide from a foe with sounds ofapproaching footsteps The piece ends sharply with twoIn Arthur Frackenpohls
