In the book Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin the author does an amazing job of grabbing the readers attention by keeping it captive until the very end His novel is about how the Grimes family turns to the church in times of despair Each member of the family has something in their lives they want to change and are hoping that God will forgive their past and help them lead their future to a better life In the early 1900s many people believed in God because it helped them tolerate what they had suffered in the past and what they will in the future You just let go Honey Let Him bring you so low so He can raise you up Page100 This phrase helped many people become strong and determined to finish their lives happy and courageousThis novel is enriched with Biblical references that bring to mind the spirit of the black Church and a realism that brings you back to Harlem in the 1930s These indications of God in the book show us the life many black people lived during this time period Life was not easy for many black people in the United States during this time period The world was their enemy because everywhere they went they were judged and all they had were their friends and family In this novel John is the character who suffers racial prejudice from the outside and his stepfathers hatred on the inside tormenting him into oblivion Go Tell It On The Mountain has a clash between father and son that soon destroys one of their identity for their rest of their life Gabriel Grimes Johns stepfather married Johns mother when John was young and he does not know that him and Roy have different fathers The abuse he suffers harbors hatred toward his stepfather He lived for the day his father would be dying and he John would curse
