In the book Half the Sky the authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn explain the dark reality of impoverished countries such as Kenya Sierra Leone Liberia Pakistan and more However as much as Kristof and WuDunn may come off as two enthusiastic and passionate activists whos desire is to get these young ladies message worldwide many speculate the true intentions of the saviorsFirst off we as Americans put ourselves onto a higher pedestal just because many of us watched a 10- minute video which we believed transformed us into social activists In the article titled The White- Savior Industrial Complex by Teju Colemar the author includes a few of his tweets about his reaction to the Kony 2012 video that came out in March last year I agree with Colemar about how Americans worry feverishly over that awful African warlord But close to 15 million Iraqis died from an American war of choice Personally I think its ignorant of white Americans to segregate people of color in other parts of the world with themselves and then attempt to help only to raise their own sense of morality In other words white Americans have undoubtedly always had the upper hand from raiding land to killing minorities however now that times have changed they want to step in and fix the damage they caused Although many believe that these activists are hard at work to accomplish what they think is necessary for change in reality those small acts of kindness and charity accomplish little They might raise awareness but will not likely generate a lot of action It is spot on when Colemar states there is much more to doing good work than making a difference There is the principle of first do no harm There is the idea that those who are being helped ought to be consulted over the matters that concern them That is to say Colemar believes that white Americans should be involved
