Smoking Freedoms at Stake In the essay Smoking freedoms at stake the author Joelle Babula argues that Nevadas local government should be allowed to enforce tabacco laws stricter than the state Babula believes that the community should have the right to decide where they want to be smokefree He explains that Nevada has the weakest tabacco laws in the United States it allows smoking almost everywhere Fortunately Senate Bill 258 might change the whole situation which the state law will allow counties and cities to decide what kind of smoking laws they want in their communities Babula quotes some opinion from health specialist and people who wish to have a smokefree environment He aslo quotes from a Las Vegas Valley convenience store owner who is unhappy about the bill Babula points out that Nevada is one of the six states that have pre-emptive smoking laws which the local government could not impose smoking laws stricter than the state And those six states have a greater incidence of lung cancer than the national average He also quotes from the members of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce that they think the local government doesnt have the experience to make and regulate tabacco laws In the beginning of the essay Babula uses a few facts to convince the audience that Nevada has the highest rate of smoking-related diseases and highest percentage of Lin 2 adult smokers This was due to the weakness of the tabacco laws and that the laws need to be reformed For smokers those information will not be convincing at all Babula might need to use more factual evidences and statistics to support his claim In the body of the essay
