Jessie Conrad was a simple ordinary boy who lived in Seattle However his whole life changed after a visit by Tibetan Monks The leader of these monks was Lama Norbu He taught Jessie the fundamental ideas of Buddhism Lama Norbu wants to bring Jessie to Tibet but his parents feel that is an absurd idea at first Their final decision however was to allow him to go and see if he was the reincarnation of Lama Dorje There they find out that he was one of three reincarnations of Lama Dorje Each child represented a different aspect of the Lama speech mind and body Throughout their whole journey and quest in finding the reincarnation of Lama Dorje Lama Norbu taught Jessie many concepts and beliefs of Buddhism and therefore makes him prominent figure To help teach Jessie about Buddhism Lama Norbu told him about the story of the Buddha He told him the story of how Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha A specific example of Lama Norbus teachings to Jessie is the well-known story about the Four Gates His father King Suddhodana tries shielding him from all the unpleasant aspects of life such as elderly sick or dying people Gradually however Siddhartha begins to get curious about the world outside and one-day sneaks outside the palace gate There he saw a man crippled with age another who was very sick and a dead man The story of Buddha is essential to Buddhism as Buddhism revolves around the Buddhas teachings In addition the Lama taught Jessie the concept of reincarnation He does this almost indirectly because he was searching for the reincarnation of his teacher Lama Dorje He thought Jessie could be the reincarnation of his teacher but was not sure But Lama Norbu had to explain to Jessie and his family the concept of reincarnation and how it works As each scene passes he reveals more details about reincarnation An example is when he told
