In Marquez One Hundred Years of Solitude only a few characters are mentioned now and then throughout the novel and one of them happens to be Melquiades Although he is only a secondary character he holds key in which the Buendias are accursed to the familys tragic destiny Melquiades moves in and out either offers assistance or creates barriers to their understanding of their fate His constant active involvement with the Buendias reinforces their mysterious and condemned fate Melquiadess influences on the family dates back when Moncado was first founded On one hand he leads the gypsies to introduce the advanced technology into Moncado which explicitly speeds up the modernization of the town On the other hand it indirectly rouses Jose Arcadios innate curiosity in science and therefore isolates him from society Consequently a charismatic leader highly esteemed by others has transformed into a solitary poor man who stubbornly experiments with his impractical imagination Nevertheless even when Jose Arcadio is spurned and mentally disordered Melquiades medially sends Prudencios ghost to destroy his scarce sanity Although Melquiades is not the direct course of Jose Arcadios tragic life he is the hidden formidable force that directs the dramatic scene He condemns Jose Arcadio to deeper and severer sufferance with his supernatural power The parchment with the inevitable dooms of the family remains mysterious and unsolved with the intervention of Melquiades The prosperity of Jose Arcadio naturally inherits their ancestors fascination in unknown knowledge Melquiades emphasizes his self-contradictory immortality of and puzzles the Buendias with the immortal and mystical of secretes enclosed by the parchment They become separated from the outside and suffer the same solitude as once Jose Arcadio experiences Melquiades however appears and vanishes now and then either to help or obstruct their decoding the parchment It seems predestined that the parchment can only be understood when it is one hundred years old and stresses that the Buendias are bound to perish and fulfill
