Medieval Life and Diseases During the Medieval period many people suffered from illnesses and diseases Most of which caused families and friends to loose loved ones Towns were full of people not to mention that the sanitation and personal hygiene was terrible People would eat off the ground and hardly ever bath or wash in any form Babies hardly had any chance to be brought into the world clean not having any diseases Most of the babies born during the medieval time did have diseases because their parents would already be infected with a disease The Middle Ages had many diseases caused mainly by poor personal hygiene and unsanitary living conditions Early towns were only small settlements outside of castles and churches As the towns grew larger walls were built around them The towns were crowded because the walls limited the amount of space to live in Houses stood crowded together and people had to build upwards to save space Most houses would end up being five to six stories tall Streets were not paved until around 1200 They were narrow dark and filthy People would throw all their garbage in the streets and disease would grow quickly During the 1200s people started to pave roads with rough cobblestones finally taking steps toward sanitation The wealthy usually had houses made out of stone or brick but most houses were made out of wood Large fires could wipe out an entire town The city of Rouen in France burned to the ground six times between 1200 and 1225 Clemens Walter Medieval Europe p 19 When merchants and craftsmen would settle in the towns they would set up organizations called guilds Guilds played an important part in town government When the first guilds were organized the towns had few laws to protect merchants and craftsmen Most laws were made and enforced by the owner of the land the town was on As townspeople gained power
