The Universe Versus Alex Woods a novel written by Gavin Extence is an utterlyheartbreaking yet heartwarming read This novel outlines the daily struggles of Alex Woods and the factors that differentiate him from his peers and the rest of society Alex is unable to relate to anyone or anything except science and logic until he met Mr Peterson in his Greenhouse The Author has illustrated Alex Woods as a boy who has epilepsy no money or friends a crazy mother and an obsessive need to confirm everything with science In this novel Alex Woods had been developed as a sympathetic character whom posses values that reinforce the desired attributes of society and oppose current moral and ethical norms Alex took cover in a shed during a chaise with his bullies Studwin Mackenzie and Asbo The consequences of the shed were fully dealt to Alex due to the mature approach he took to the situation I do have principles Your actions say otherwise But they werent my actions Their names arent important The important thing is that they are to blame not me Page 109 Although Alex admits that he was not to blame for the vandalism of the shed he does however take full responsibility by not telling anyone the names of the bullies who he knows did do it Rather he respected the ramifications that his mother or the man would decide to arrange for him Someone had to hang for the wanton destruction of his Shed and that someone evidently was me All that was left to be resolved was the precise terms of my penance Page 111 Alex demonstrates his burden of liability further Most would not understand why he feels this way and no feel this way themselves if they were in his situation because he was not directly at fault or involved in the vandalism Alex however felt genuinely obligated to ensure that the man had received adequate compensation
