The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County The story starts with an introduction The author introduces the background of the storyteller whose name is Simon Wheeler The author was told that he might ask Simon Wheeler about Reverend Levidas W Smiley who is the person authors friend is looking for Simon Wheeler has been Angles Camp where Smiley resident The narrator finds Wheeler in the bar room and describes Wheeler as fat and bald-headed and had an expression of winning gentleness and simplicity Twain 1261 From fourth paragraph including everything about Jim Smiley and his jumping frog is told in Simon Wheelers words From Simon Wheelers narration Jim Smiley addicted to betting Smiley bets on almost anything if he could get anybody to bet on the other side Twain 1261 He is even betting on the date of death of the wife of his friend Walker Most important thing is he Smiley was lucky uncommon lucky he most always come out winner Twain 1261 This is the foreshadowing for Smiley lost bet on his frog later in the story This makes Smileys frog lose in jumping contest so dramatic Simon Wheeler then tells about a little small bull-pup called Andrew Jackson owned by Smiley Smiley always come out winner on that pup Andrew Jackson Twain 1262 Although Wheeler did not spend many words on this pup it is just another example to show Smiley bets on almost everything and with his unusual lucky The narrator continues with a story about Danl Webster a frog Smiley trains the frog to jump farther than any frog in Calaveras County It becomes a famous jumping frog One day a stranger came to Angels Camp Smiley makes stinger to bet 40 that Webster can beat any frog in Calaveras County in a jumping contest While Jim Smiley gone for catching a frog for the stranger the stranger picked up Danl Webster and filled him up
