The Sound of Waves is the story of a boys journey into adulthood The boy Shinji is faced with many obstacles throughout the novel which he overcomes with the help of one key element the sea Yukio Mishimas style and use of language help to identify this key element and unwrap the meaning of the novel The connection Mishima creates between Shinji and the sea begins immediately with Shinjis introduction into the novel The first sentence the reader reads about Shinji introduces him as a young fisherman heading to the lighthouse Shinji also dangles a large fish in one hand 6 on his way to the lighthouse Following this brief paragraph the reader is presented with Shinjis first actual character description The boy was only eighteen having finished high school just last year He was tall and well-built beyond his years and only his face revealed his youthfulness His dark eyes were exceedingly clear but their clarity was not that of intellectualityit was a gift that the sea bestows upon those who make their livelihood upon it He was still wearing the same clothes he fished in each daya pair of trousers inherited from his dead father and a cheap jumper Mishima 6In the paragraph Mishima uses words like boy and youthful 6 to describe Shinji Mishimas word choice assists the reader in identifying Shinji as a boy from the start of the novel Mishima also powerfully connects Shinji to the sea in with the sentence about his eyes Shinjis eyes are a gift that the sea had bestowed upon him However this gift from the sea is only given to those who make their livelihood upon it 6 Shinjis livelihood is made upon the sea and in return he has been gifted with eyes of exceeding clarity This is followed by a description of what Shinji is wearing the same clothes he fished in each daya pair of trousers inherited from his dead father
