What separates a tragic hero from a modern day hero but makes them similar According to Joseph Campbell the tragic hero performs a courageous act in battle or saves a life 172 while the modern day hero is a hero in birth when he undergoes a tremendous psychological as well as physical transformation 172 People are identical in a sense in which they journey along a path of struggle and self-recognition In the short stories Araby and Afternoon of an American Boy two young adolescents experience romance for the first time and both encounter challenges as they attempt to carry their visions into the real world In the end both suffer and learn about the reality in life by gaining self-knowledge Although they both share these similarities Araby reflects on a closely personal and emotional memory involving religious symbolism while Afternoon of an American Boy is a flashback of a humiliating and laughable first date In hard times obstacles are placed in front of people to prevent them from fulfilling their dreams Araby and Afternoon of an American Boy are no different for these teens The unnamed boy in Araby meets the Mangans sister and attempts to win her heart He learns that there would be a retreat at the girls convent As much as the girl wants to be with the boy her religion draws a line between the two preventing them from being together The religious symbolism describes the girl as if she is in prison while she turns a silver bracelet round and round her wrist 183 like a set of shackles because even if she likes him back she would be confined to only giving him half of her heart Mangans sister admires the boy and has scruples at the same time making them both different Elwyn White on the other hand makes the resolution to call and take Eileen out to a tea party for a dance However Elwyn lacks
