Section 1 Summary Thunder and lightning crash about a wild Scottish moor Three haggard old women witches materialize out of the storm In eerie chanting tones they discuss where they will meet again--upon the heath after the battle to confront Macbeth As quickly as they arrived they disappear At a military camp near Forres King Duncan of Scotland asks a wounded sergeant for news about the battle between the Scots and the Norwegians The sergeant who was wounded helping Prince Malcolm escape captivity by the Norwegians replies that Macbeth has killed the traitorous Scot Macdonwald and that Macbeth and Banquo the Scottish generals are fighting with great courage and violence The Thane of Ross a Scottish nobleman enters and tells the king that the traitorous Thane of Cawdor has been defeated and the army of Norway repelled Duncan decrees that the Thane of Cawdor be put to death and that Macbeth the hero of the victorious army be given his title Ross leaves to inform Macbeth of the news On the heath near the battlefield thunder rolls and the three witches appear They discuss where they have been--one says Killing swine another describes the revenge she has planned upon a sailors wife who did not share her chestnuts Suddenly a drum beats and one of the witches cries that Macbeth is coming Macbeth and Banquo on their way to the kings court at Forres come upon the witches shrinking in horror at the sight Banquo asks if they are mortal women saying that they seem to have beards The witches hail Macbeth as Thane of Glamis and Thane of Cawdor--baffling Macbeth who has not yet learned of his ascension to the latter title--and declare that he will be king one day Macbeth stunned and intrigued presses the witches for more information but they have turned their attention to Banquo speaking in yet more riddles They call him lesser than Macbeth and greater not so
