Walker Brothers Cowboy The narrator of the story has a strained relationship with her mother On the first page the dress fitting is an allegory describing their relationship We leave my motheritching from the hot woolPg1 The narrator feels that the clothes are just like her mother as they are uncomfortable When the narrator and her mother make a simple trip to the store the mother irritates the narrator even more by making her dress up beyond the social ranking that she has Her mother wears a good dress navy blueon the back stepsPg5 This annoys the narrator because they are dressed much fancier compared with the other women of the town who are dressed in loose belt-less dresses torn under the armsPg5 We have not walked past two houses before I feel we have become objects of universal ridicule Even the dirty words chalked on the sidewalk are laughing at usPg5 The narrator conveys her annoyance by suggesting that even things that cant speak make fun of her Later on that page the narrator describes her mothers attempts to imitate conversations the family used to have when they were well to do Her mothers seemingly constant attempts to remember what the family once was annoy the narrator Do you remember your sandbox next to the kitchen window I pretended to remember far less than I do wary of being trapped into sympathy or any unwanted emotion These examples showcase the estranged relationship between the narrator and her mother In the short time she knows Nora the narrator grows to like her more than her mother Nora seems to bring out a new personality in the narrator and her father When she and Nora are dancing the narrator feels something that she hasnt felt in a long time Round and round the linoleum me proud intentPg16 After only knowing Nora for a short while the narrator feels proud something she hasnt felt
