The Cold War began after World War II in 1945 and continued until the early 1990s The Cold War was primarily a political and ideological conflict that affected many countries around the world socially or economically The Second World War destroyed the old diplomatic system of great powers and replaced it with a polarized world of two superpowers Germany Japan and Italy were occupied and demilitarized at the end of WW2 France Britain and China had all suffered heavy losses and their economies were in shambles The two great powers the United States and the Soviet Union struggled for a balance of power in a world where even the definition of peace had changed Economic freedom and political democracy were commingled in the eyes of the world much as communism and authoritarian government were The Cold War was a political military and ideological war between the Americans and the Russians It would be more correct to say that it was The Nationalists vs The Communist This was the cause for most of the economic and political ramifications The Soviets suffered over 15 million casualties during WW II and witnessed the burning and bombing of much of its European Russia although USSR possessed the most powerful infantry in the world The US undoubtedly emerged from the war as the worlds most powerful nation The US had the largest navy and air force and its economy had grown massively during the war The relationship between the superpowers which at the start of the Cold War was good-natured rapidly grew sour The Americans had an increased level of fear because after all the Russians had repeatedly invaded the west in the past three centuries and their desire to create a buffer zone of satellite states was not irrational President Harry Truman on the other hand thought Soviet policy was aggressive expansionist He saw Stalin as another Hitler seeking world domination not as a
