This passage mainly shows the protagonists fear of being discovered in a state where he doesnt want to be discovered Jack was alone in the apartment with the lights turned off rifle in hand and a costume to go along with that While Jack was in the middle of his fantasy world he notices Sister James pulling up next to his building and thats when his fear starts to rise Jack goes through many emotions just as Sister James is walking up the stairs to their apartment and knocks on the door because he has had a past with Sister James that he feels guilty about The diction used in the passage showed the wanted attention that Jack yearned for because on one hand he doesnt want to open the door and let Sister James in but on the other hand he does want to let her in but he doesnt know how shell react when she sees Jack and this is also a paradox This passage is also telling the reader that if Jack wasnt in his costume and props he would most likely open the door for Sister James but since he has the rifle he feels that he is in power and control of everything around him When Jack says I didnt understand myself it showed how he wasnt acting mature at all because hes arguing with himself over a small situation Jacks overall tone in this passage is that he isnt confident enough to overcome the task at hand Jack was both scared and confused at the same time because he wasnt sure is the decision he was making to not open the door for her was the right thing to do Jack is aware of the fact that Sister James will judge the way he is acting if he opens the door for her but a part of him still wanted to open the door because he felt a sense
