We traveled all night so we could wake in paradise The sun was rising over the wing of our aircraft like a ball of fire in the sky The pilots voice came over the intercom and announced our approach with the usual warning to remain seated with our seatbelts fastened we were about to land At this point Mary and I had no idea what to expect but we knew one thing we were ready for a much deserved vacation The air became turbulent as we descended We bounced jerked and then stabilized The airstrip was small and elevated so we had to actually climb a bit to level out and make land As we touched down we experienced a deep feeling of relief the same feeling that most passengers have once they realize theyre on the ground As we disembarked the plane I knew immediately we were no longer in Kansas The air was thick and heavy and there was no umbilical ramp connecting the plane to the airport we walked down the boarding stairs onto the tarmac and made our way to Cancun International Airport customs As we entered the building I could feel the humid air pungent with the perspiration of a thousand tourists This place was nothing like the sleek lined air conditioned shiny airports of home I must admit I was a bit surprised I had seen images on television of overloaded buses of locals carrying goats and chickens but thought that was just the movies It wasnt that bad but no air conditioning Really Then to top that off we waited in line at customs for what seemed like hours in that heat They had an unusual system of random inspection as I made my way to the front of the line ahead of me was a stop signal When the signal was green you could pass and leave the airport when it was red you were to be
