My observations occurred at Maplewood Elementary School in Indianapolis Indiana Maplewood Elementary School is an urban school with a medium socio-economic status SES I attended Maplewood Elementary School for grades K-5 so it was really neat to go back and see my teachers that were still there However it was a bit surprising because the entire school was newly remodeled I observed a first grade classroom being taught by my kindergarten teacher and fifth grade teacher Mrs Lipton is the teacher and Mrs Green is the reading aide When I walked into the classroom it was very eye opening There were three shelves full of books four laptops for the childrens use and encouragement posters hungamong the top of the room Mrs Lipton encourages good behavior by using a chart with 6 spaces on them It is lined with clothespins with each childs name on a clothespin If the children are behaving themselves and doing what theyre told they move their own clothespin up But it they arent behaving they move their clothespin down Each day every child starts with hisher clothespin on the fine space The spaces are Awesome Great Good Fine Keep Trying and Stop and Think A visual of the classroom is attached There was a list of the Alphabet with a fall word written by each one There was a separate shelf of books that has to do with Thanksgiving which is updated before each Holiday Throughout my observations I witnessed multiple interesting behaviors A student came up to me shortly after I introduced myself to the class Her name is Willow She tugged on my sleeve and said Did you know that Im half vampire half rose half tree and half fortune teller Then she ran away and sat down I was observing the reading aide Mrs Green play a spelling game with a group of 5 students They had to spell words on cards
