During the 17th century many European nations had absolute governments where the monarch was all powerful These monarchs believed that they had divine right a right from God to rule their nations in the way that they wanted to Two famous examples of an absolute monarch are Louis XIV of France and Czar Peter I or Peter the Great of Russia Both of these monarchs had childhoods plagued with rebellion of the nobles Louis XIVs family was driven out of Paris and he lived a life of poverty fear and humiliation while Peter the Great had to experience his own half sister and the military troops Streltsy kill many of his friends and relatives Because of these childhood memories both of these rulers held distrust for nobility While it can be said that both men were fearsome absolute monarchs Peter the Great was more absolute because of his army and navy his government policies and how he treated his nobles and familyEver since he was young Peter loved war games At the age of 12 he made his own wooden fortress and forced boys to play with him using real guns After he became the sole ruler of Russia he made sure that all military officers were trained because he knew that certain subject such as math would help them calculate what angles to shoot at Unlike Louis XIV he did not wage wars just because of revenge on a country Peter the Great had a goal to reach the Baltic Sea and join the Baltic Sea trade When Peter ruled Russia the country was landlocked and it needed to trade Peter waged war on neighboring countries such as the Ottoman Empire and Sweden Because his army was so untrained Peter could not win against either country However because of his brilliant military tactics like burning his villages so the Swedes couldnt get supplies and attacking from sea and land he was able to have
