It was 530 am when the first shots rang at the Battle of Gettysburg The turning point of the American Civil War was now underway The Federals and the Rebels were battling it out for their countries It all began when Federal troops under Major General Howard battled Major General Henry Heth of the Confederates near McPhersons Ridge around 1030 am Heth was then forced back into Herr Ridge During the battle General John F Reynolds was killed and Howard took over control in his absence The Federals left corps at the west and north side of Gettysburg to defend the town I Corps at the North side and IX were situated at the West side Later that day General Robert E Lee arrived for the Confederates There was no intention of fighting on that day in him However a division of Ewells head up by Rodes met Yankee troops placed to defend the western side of Gettysburg in a skirmish Soon after first contact Heths men rejoined the rest of the Confederates in their attack on the western front After 300 pm Jubal Earlys division of Confederate soldiers joined in and flanked the Unions XI corps on the North side Simultaneously Major General Penders division took over for Heths men and took cover along Seminary Ridge Not even an hour later were the Yankees in retreat back through Gettysburg with casualties totaling over 9000 while the Rebels were under 7000 This ultimately was a win for the Confederates but as time would tell the high grounds they let the Yankees keep would ultimately be their own demise Lee excited by his victory a day prior ordered 20000 men controlled by Longstreet and AP Hill to attack the Unions flank Ewells orders were to place his men to the right of the Yankees with the authority to engage in an all out attack Meade had by then arrived to take command of the Union
